How Are Lab-Grown Diamonds Made?

Scientists have developed two advanced methods to recreate the natural diamond growing process.

1. Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) Method

The CVD process is the most widely used method for producing high-quality diamonds for fine jewelry.

Step 1: Preparing the Diamond Seed

The process begins with a tiny slice of natural or previously grown diamond called a diamond seed.

Step 2: Placing the Seed Inside the Chamber

The seed is placed inside a sealed vacuum chamber designed specifically for diamond growth.

Step 3: Adding Carbon-Rich Gases

The chamber is filled with carbon-containing gases such as:

  • Methane
  • Hydrogen

Step 4: Heating the Chamber

The gases are heated to temperatures between 800°C and 1,200°C using microwave energy.

Step 5: Carbon Crystal Growth

The gases separate into individual carbon atoms, which slowly attach to the diamond seed layer by layer.

This gradual growth forms a larger diamond crystal over several weeks.

Step 6: Cutting and Polishing

After reaching the desired size, the rough diamond is:

  • Cut
  • Faceted
  • Polished

using the same techniques applied to mined diamonds.

2. High Pressure High Temperature (HPHT) Method

HPHT replicates the natural conditions found deep beneath the Earth's crust.

Step 1

A diamond seed is placed into a chamber surrounded by pure carbon.

Step 2

The chamber applies:

  • Pressure exceeding 1.5 million pounds per square inch
  • Temperatures above 1,400°C

Step 3

The carbon melts and crystallizes onto the seed.

Step 4

After several days or weeks, a rough diamond is produced.

The stone is then cut, polished, and graded.
